DOLE-X releases PhP703K emergency employment to 190 El NiƱo-stricken Bonifacio town workers

OROQUIETA CITY, Misamis Occidental, June 17, 2019 --- The Department of Labor and Employment’s (DOLE’s) mandate to help reduce unemployment, both in the formal and informal/ disadvantaged sectors is continually strengthened by the implementation of the TUPAD (Tulong Pangkabuhayan para sa mga Displaced/Disadvantaged Workers) program implemented by the Regional Office No. X through Misamis Occidental Provincial Field Office (DOLE-X Mis. Occ. PFO) particularly to the 190 beneficiaries of the 13 barangays of Bonifacio municipality on 22 of May 2019, this province.

Affected by El Niño in the first quarter of 2019, municipality of Bonifacio experienced drought, dried water and land resources affecting animals and agricultural products which resulted to decreased income capacities of the localities.

Municipal Mayor Samson R. Dumanhug felt the need for intervention for income augmentation through livelihood projects and/or emergency employment said, “Providing these localities with immediate temporary employment through tree planting for ten days can help solve this immediate financial problem and in the long run, will benefit the municipality through the tree-growing.”

As a response, DOLE-X Mis. Occ. PFO Chief Leonardo G. Rodrigo facilitated the release of PhP 703,000.00 representing wages to worker-beneficiaries of the locality, which is inclusive of GSIS insurance coverage to protect their welfare during their engagement on the program.

As mandated, wages was based on the statutory minimum wage of Northern Mindanao. Based on Wage Order RBX-20, the minimum wage at PhP365.00 per day was the basis in the computation multiplied by the number of actual days work ranging from 10-30 days based on approved work program. Chief Rodrigo during the turnover of financial assistance stressed in his message the need for wise utilization of salaries prioritizing needs such as food, education; and selected wants which may or may not be important.

In a statement, Rey Sabellano, one of the beneficiaries, extended his appreciation to DOLE-X for the assistance extended aimed to augment incomes and to augment incomes through wages. It is hoped that a start-up on their recovery from distress due to El Niño will finally be felt.
