Five-year SPES baby now a college student

TAGOLOAN, Misamis Oriental, 23 July --- Through the financial aid of the Special Program for the Employment of Students (SPES), student-beneficiary for five years Jomar S. Saludares or a SPES baby is now a second year Mechanical Engineering student of the University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines.  The 19-year old Saludares was able to graduate from High School through SPES.

Saludares, the youngest of five siblings, was the only one to be in College education in the family. Both parents are working as barangay staff, thus introduced him to SPES and apply.

“From my wages in working every summer, I was able to buy school supplies and other needs, which strengthened me to win over the challenges I encountered in my work life. My timidity gradually turned to confidence due to enriching work experiences. I worked on clerical tasks, participated in trainings, and developed my interpersonal skills among my superiors and co-workers,” Saludares said.

Through perseverance and hard work, Saludares grew with the program. His years of work experience were able to motivate him to finish school and help his family financially.

SPES is one of the employment facilitation programs of the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) which aims to help poor and deserving students pursue education. This offers work for a minimum period of 20 to 70 days during summer vacation and Christmas holidays. The compensation scheme is 60% from the implementer/employer and 40% salary share from the DOLE. The beneficiary’s salary is used to defray expenses for their educational needs basically for buying school supplies and paying tuition fees.

Last 23 July 2019, the DOLE-X through Misamis Oriental Provincial Field Office (Mis. Or. PFO) released 40% salary share through money transfer services of M Lhuillier to the student-beneficiaries of the municipality.

The DOLE - PFO of Misamis Oriental thanked the Local Government Unit of Tagoloan, Misamis Oriental through its Public Employment Service Office for its continuing support and encouragement to the youth to be more productive. He emphasized SPES as a mechanism for youth empowerment as future members of the labor force of the country.
