DOLE-X WODP scholar, future MedTech wins 1st-RU in beauty tilt

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, 22 August - A 19-year-old student wins 1st runner-up in the recently held Bb. El Salvador City 2019 perceived by local pageant fans as the grandest in terms of prizes and honor.

Zairah Ayon-ayon, a sophomore taking Medical Technology in Liceo de Cagayan University was outpoured with cash prize, trophy, and a hailed among youth ambassadors.

“All my life, I never believed that I will have enough confidence to showcase my identity in front of many people. I am just a timid girl who do not want to be recognized but wants to contribute to my community. Joining pageants is not what I prayed for, but God gave me this.” Ayon-ayon said in her facebook account after the pageant held at the newly-opened El Salvador City gymnasium on 15 August 2019.

“I may not be the crowned but I am grateful for this experience. Nothing lost but something came up. I met new people who taught me a lot to become the best version of myself. This helped me to plant the seed of determination and perseverance.” She added.

Ayon-ayon, a pageant neophyte who stands 5’5”, enjoys watching documentaries, social media blogging, and is into sports such as volleyball, badminton, chess and swimming.

She is on her 2nd year as Workers Organization Development Program scholar of the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) – X who bested 15 other candidates.

When asked about the scholarship privilege, she thanked DOLE-X saying that proceeding to university is but a dream for the family. But holding on in the journey became a little challenging especially when everything that’s needed for her to finish her studies is costly.

Ayon-ayon is among the thirteen (13) continuing WODP scholars in DOLE-X whose mother is a labor union member of Ororama Workers Union-AWATU in Cagayan de Oro City.

With the said scholarship, DOLE shoulders her educational expenses for school years (SY) 2018-2021 with a total of eight semesters covering her tuition, miscellaneous fees, book allowance, and monthly stipend of P3,000.00.

She is expected to complete her course within the specified SY, and accumulate passing grade for all of her subjects, otherwise, the scholarship would be terminated.

The pageant is among the city’s highlight activities during its annual town fiesta spearheaded by the local government unit.
