Iligan-LDN Family Welfare Federation feeds 47 day care kids; also gives school supplies

Iligan City, 9 September --- The five-day “Timbang Mo, Iwasto Ko!” a feeding program of the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE-X) under its Project Angel Tree and sponsored by the different companies of the Federation of Family Welfare Committees of Iligan City-Lanao del Norte (FFWC IC-LDN) benefitted 47 preschool students of San Roque Day Care Center on 19-23 August 2019, here.

DOLE-X, through its Lanao del Norte Provincial Field Office (LDN PFO) Chief Remegio D. Cabañog said that aside from nourishing the children, he was grateful to the Federation for sponsoring the school supplies as a means to lessen the burden of the parents in providing the basic school needs of the less fortunate children and at the same time encourage the kids to stay in school.

“It is the aim of the Department that all Filipino children continue their education and stay away from hazardous tasks that will endanger their lives and health,” Cabañog said.

The officers of the Federation had chosen the San Roque Day Care Center as one of the most poverty-stricken barangays of the city.  As prevention, Cabañog said these children are prone resorting to child labor, hence the said intervention from DOLE.

Maria Gustav, mother of John, one of the beneficiaries said, “Walay kasudlan ang akong kalipay kay wala nako damha nga akoang anak ma-apil aning feeding program sa DOLE ug FFWC ug natagaan pajud ug mga magamit sa iyahang pag-eskwela, nalooy ko sa anak nga mipadayon gihapon ug skwela maski dili nako mapalitan ug gamit sap ag- skwela tungod sa amoang kalisod, Daghang Salamat sa FFWC ug DOLE”. (My utmost gratitude to DOLE and FFWC for the assistance given which I did not expect.  I am disheartened whenever I see my son continue school even if we cannot provide for his needs.)

Gustav, an on-call “labandera”, said their income is not sufficient to sustain even the basic needs of the family. Both she and her husband have no permanent work with the latter as laborer in occupation.

In part of the ten dimensions on nutrition and education and as part of its priority activities of the Federation, the Family Welfare Program of the Department is an advocacy strategy of the government through the private companies in adopting a family-centered approach in the workplace and reverberates towards the community.

Moreover, Project Angel Tree aims to gather and grant the wishes of child laborers through the building up of a network of patrons and supporters of the national efforts against child labor.  Donors, benefactors, contributors, and sponsors [IC-LDN FFWC] of the program are called angels.  Services under the program include food, clothing, shelter, mentoring, livelihood, educational and medical assistance and other work and training opportunities for target child worker-beneficiaries.
