DOLE SeNa settles P1.3M to 59 farm workers

OROQUIETA CITY, Misamis Occidental --- For efficient, impartial, and expeditious settlement of labor issues, the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE- X), thru Misamis Occidental Provincial Field Office (Mis. Occ. PFO) conducted a Single Entry Approach (SENA) conference on 24 February 20 addressing the complaint of the workers of Bersheba Country Farm in Ozamiz City filed on 27 January 2020.

After a series of SENA conferences, 59 farm workers were paid a total of PhP 1,364,000.00 by the company representing salary differentials, payment of service incentive leave (SIL), holiday pay and 13th month pay. The payment was done in DOLE Mis Occ. PFO and was given by the respondent’s duly authorized representative, HR Manager Naomi Raagas.

One of the complainants, farm head caretaker Sem A. Bendula received total monetary settlement of PhP 30,000.00 for his four-year service. He voluntarily resigned after receiving the settlement. Same happened with his wife, Melinda Bendula who was assigned in the production department received the amount of Php 37,000.00 as settlement.

Ms. Bendula disclosed that since the start of their employment at the farm, both of them received Php 400.00/day only and they have to feed and send to school their three children. ”Lisod kaayo i-budget ang kwarta pero wala mi choice kay wala pud mi nahuman ug skwela, dili mi kapili ug trabaho. Amo nalang siguradoon nga ang among mga anak ang maka-earn ug degree” (It is very difficult to budget the amount of money we have but we have no choice because we did not finish college that’s why we cannot choose the job that suits us. We will make sure our kids will earn a degree).

Through DOLE’s conduct of SeNa conferences, Ms. Bendula gratefully thanked Mis. Occ. PFO of DOLE-X in behalf of all the workers for addressing their concern in accordance with existing labor rules and regulations. “Nag-pasalamat mi nga tungod sa pag-action sa DOLE sa among mga hangyo ug reklamo, nasakto na ang ilang pa-sweldo sa ilang mga tawo based na sa minimum wage ug nihatag na pud sila sa mga saktong benipisyo according sa balaod. Sigurado na maka-angat ni sa estado sa among pamilya”, (We are thankful that through DOLE’s action towards our claims and allegations, the company has corrected the salary of the workers based on the minimum wage and they have also given other benefits and other benefits according to law. We are sure that this will improve the status of our families.)

SeNa is a citizen-centered dispute resolution mechanism of the DOLE through expeditious settlement of grievances as strategy to de-clog labor cases with less government resource expenditure characterized by quick response on complaints or disputes that provides apt relief to erring workers.
