Random Act of Gratitude: The HUFIA’s Example

MAMBAJAO, Camiguin --- The Hubangon Fisherfolk Association (HUFIA), an enrolled Sustainable Livelihood Framework (SLF) of the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE-X) thru the Camiguin Provincial Field Office (Cam PFO) continually operated its Broiler Chicken Production Project for more than three years. It supplies dressed chicken to different meat shops and chicken “lechon” kiosks mainly in Mahinog Municipality and its nearby areas.

Despite the continuing threats of the COVID-19 pandemic, the organization continued its operation in order to supply the needs of its customers.  To sustain their mission of becoming relevant and significant to the enormous demands of this crisis, HUFIA continued to exert efforts to share part of their income to the entire community of Hubangon, Mahinog, and to the front liners in the entire province.

Recently, HUFIA produced more than 1,500 dressed chicken, a portion of which were distributed to front liners such as policemen, firemen, army, coast guards, and provincial government workers. HUFIA’s gesture acknowledging the frontliners’ heroism and love of country is laudable. Compliance to health and safety protocols through the Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) as mandated by Proclamation No. 922 declaring a State of Public Health Emergency throughout the country is part of its continuing endeavors. Moreover, front liners were given a kilo of dressed chicken with other essentials distributed by the Local Government Unit of Barangay Hubangon, Municipality of Mahinog of the province.

In mid-April, the organization distributed half sack of rice (25kg) to their members and another three kilograms of rice with other goods such as milk, milo and sugar to 100 households of barangay Hubangon.

HUFIA President Michael Maamo said, “Dako kaayo og natabang kanamo and DOLE livelihood assistance. Tungod sa nagrasyahan ug nilambo among livelihood project, nakatabang mi sa among mga miyembro ug sa komunidad labi na sa mga front liners diin among napaambit ang abot niini ilabina niining panahon sa krisis. Gaan sa among kasing-kasing nga nakapa-ambit sa grasya nga among nadawat ngadto sa uban.  Ug dako kaayo ang among kalipay, bisan sa walay kasigurohang kahimtang, nakapalipay mi sa uban pinaagi sa among ginagmay nga pamaagi.” (The DOLE livelihood project played a big role in sustaining our project. Through its growing income, we were able to share our blessings to our members, the community and most especially to the front liners. We are very happy to help others, even in this time of uncertainty.)

Meanwhile, the frontliners expressed their gratitude for the assistance they received from the organization. “Nalipay ug nagpasalamat ko nga isa ko sa na gahinan sa HUFIA, dili mag matter kung unsa ka gamay ug dako ang ilang gihatag kundi ang kinasing-kasing nila nga pagpa-ambit sa ilang grasya,” PMSg Buenaventura B. Ranoco said. (I am thankful for being one of the recipients of the donations by HUFIA. The quantity does not matter, as long as given heartily.)

HUFIA’s noble act of generosity is one of its organizational values worthy of emulation. Notably, the humble and sincere expression of gratitude is among its strengths that need to be highlighted and be made a legacy to the organization’s future undertakings.

Mabuhay ka HUFIA! Padayon!
