CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY--- A Special Program for the Employment of Students (SPES) beneficiary of Barangay Iponan is now ready to use her newly purchased android phone for the shift to online virtual classes amid the new normal distance learning, thanks to Local Government Unit (LGU) of Cagayan de Oro City and the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE-X) for granting her 22-day work-from-home concentrated on planting organic vegetables.

17-year old Stephanie G. Ipulan, an incoming eleventh-grader at Iponan National School immediately bought a cellular phone after receiving her PhP5,000.00 salary for her to participate during the online learning set by the Department of Education amid the pandemic period.

Eldest of five siblings, Ipulan is one of the 6,000 student-beneficiaries chosen by the LGU-CDO who was provided with temporary employment being poor but deserving individual to augment her family’s income in ensuring the pursuit of her education.

For her, the absence gadget like the cellular phone is a real struggle who is at risk of being left out considering the low wages of her father who is a construction worker, and her laundrywoman mother.

"Importante para nako ang cellphone tungod kay mao kini ang makapa tuman sa akong pangandoy isip usa ka maestra. Sukad-sukad, karon pa ako naka angkon niini tungod sa SPES. Salamat LGU CDO and DOLE-X," Ipulan said.

For this challenging COVID-19 time, the local government innovated SPES by introducing food gardens and food education for beneficiaries aged 20 years old and below who are restricted to go out from their respective homes due to quarantine protocols.

Public Employment Services Office-CDO Manager Kathleen Kate D. Sorilla stated that the redesigning of the program is in support of Mayor Oscar S. Moreno's food literacy and environmental education that he advocates.
