288 NorMin union and workers association members now certified Safety Officers 1 through WODP Schola

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, December 5 -- The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) in Northern Mindanao certified 288 Safety Officers (SO) 1 on Basic Occupational Safety and Health Training (BOSH), conducted by DOLE-accredited Safety Training Organizations, HSE International Health Safety and Environment Consultancy OPC for union groups and Workers Associations (WAs).

DOLE-X, with its Workers Organization Development Program (WODP) Scholarship facilitated the said union scholars as its mechanism in strengthening trade unions in providing continuous learning and growth aiming welfare to the employer and its workers in developing the capabilities of the workers and their organization.

WODP scholarship focuses on organizations and skills capacity building like leadership, organizational development and management, labor and human relations, grievance handling, labor laws, occupational safety and health (OSH), productivity and other organizational management and skills development trainings appropriate to the organizations’ needs.

The face-to-face training resulted the participation of 151 union members from ALU-TUCP, NAFLU-KMU, and FFW; alongside 87 WAs members; and 50 industry tripartite council officers in line with DOLE-X’s provision of educational opportunities upon the issuance of DOLE-X memorandum dated 12 October 2020 or the SO Training 1 Scholarship Grant under WODP.

BOSH SO 1 training is an 8-hour OSH orientation plus 2-hour Trainers’ Training designed to impart knowledge and skills on basic OSH concepts and principles to enable potential safety officers to implement respective company's safety and health program.

In adhering government’s health protocols amid the Covid-19 pandemic, DOLE-X designed the conduct of training in different groups, thereby allowing only 25 participants to ensure the protection of participants and resource persons.


Conceptualized in September 2020, the project has lined up 10 batches of free training for the whole month of November 2020.

Participant Efryl Kin A. Libago thanked DOLE-X initiative for empowering him to grow as a worker from the Construction Workers Solidarity. “I learned a lot today. I would be happy to re-echo my learnings to my fellow employees.” He said.

In his message, DOLE-X OIC Regional Director Albert E. Gutib highlights the Department’s commitment to deliver and provide appropriate services especially at this period of pandemic.
