DOLE-Mission RACE Barangay HERO, now a public school teacher

Mambajao, Camiguin --- The former intern of the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE-X) Mission Rebooting Economic Activities through Community Engagement (RACE) HERO (Healthy Economic Recovery Officer) through Community Engagement (RACE) GIP (Government Internship Program) Ms. Joannie Jadman Salugsugan is now hired as Teacher I of the Department of Education assigned at Guinsiliban National High School.

Salugsugan was formerly assigned at the DOLE-X Camiguin Provincial Field Office. The OIC-Chief, Ms. Arlyn Z. Bael said the 23-year- old Cabuan, Guinsiliban resident was hired in the said PFO on 16 June 2021 until 30 September 2021 with a minimum wage salary.

Salugsugan profiled the skills available in the community using the Individual Work Force and Establishments form.

“As an enumerator and fresh graduate with only a month of previous government work experience, I enjoyed learning to communicate and interact with people. I experienced how to listen to their stories and insights on life. I am grateful because I was able to gain work experiences through DOLE-X,” Salugsugan said.

Salugsugan said her salary from DOLE as an intern helped defray the basic household expenses of her family with only PhP 9,000.00 monthly income from both her mother’s delivery of banana and coconut vinegar to Mambajao Public Market and her father’s side-car driver earnings.

Bael said Salugsugan’s work experiences and accomplishments were recognized when she was hired as Teacher-I on 1 October 2021. She is now receiving a salary grade 11 pay.

“Being a Barangay HERO improved my sense of responsibility and boosted my self-confidence. I also learned the value of being a team player, which upgraded my credentials in the labor market ,” Salugsugan said.

Mission RACE project is conceptualized and implemented to determine the genuine labor market situation and sustainable livelihood opportunities via the conduct of intensive profiling activities in the locality to identify necessary interventions and policy formulation.

The Mission RACE is implemented nationwide as a multilateral flagship program and consortium effort among the following partner agencies: Bureau of Local Employment (BLE); Bureau of Workers with Special Concerns (BWSC); Employees Compensation Commission (ECC); National Wages and Productivity Commission (NWPC); National Reintegration Center for OFWs (NRCO); and Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA).

GIP is a component of KABATAAN 2000 under Executive Order (EO) no. 139, S. 1993, and DOLE Administrative Order No. 260-15, which provides opportunities and engages young workers to serve the general public in government agencies/entities projects and programs at the national and local level.
