DOLE-X conducts lecture on general labor standards and laws to Claveria, Mis. Or. Barangay officials
Claveria, Misamis Oriental --- The Jaime V. Ongpin Foundation Inc. (JVOFI) facilitated a Conflict Resolution and Management Seminar with the Department of Labor and Employment, Regional Office No. X (DOLE-X), through its Eastern Misamis Oriental Provincial Field Office (EMO PFO), as one of the invited lecturers on General Labor Standards to some 18 barangay mediators on 12 December 2016 at MOSCAT, this municipality.
DOLE-X EMO PFO Head Errol A. Natividad and Labor Laws Compliance Officer Dundee E. Daing facilitated the lecture with JVOFI project coordinator Maria Nona Michelle De Lada and her staff.
De Lada informed that the seminar aimed to provide the barangay mediators additional learning on mediation to provide them with the capability in resolving conflicts between planters and farmers to barangays in their respective areas of jurisdiction.
“In addition, this will give them a boost of their confidence in finding an accurate solution for a particular case they will be handling,” De Lada added.
JVOFI has been a help in the Claveria municipality for some five years now and its main intention is to help the farmers, planters and most especially the members of the community. They facilitate in conducting trainings and seminars, as well as advocacy in their good practices.
From the reports, De Lara noted that Claveria has some areas with concerns on labor disputes. Being an agricultural land, there are a number of disputes between planters and workers.
“One preventive measure is to improve the skills of these conciliators and mediators,” De Lara suggested. From JVOFI training needs analysis reports, some of them lack the knowledge and skills in handling disputes.
On the other hand, Natividad underscored DOLE’s support in preventing labor disputes through the advocacy on General Labor Standards and the labor laws, rules, and regulations.
“We should take conflict-handling seriously because our decisions are crucial in the development of the case. Furthermore, the Department is always here to promote industrial peace and a healthy workplace environment resulting to productivity,” Natividad assured.
Mr. Robert S. Nillama, one of the participants, was pleased to respond, “We are so delighted that the facilitators took time to come here [in our barangay] to give us these important information regarding conciliation and mediation, and I hope this will never be the last. We would like to thank the officers of DOLE-X, through Mr. Natividad for coming over and giving us meaningful insights. And we would like to thank also Jaime V. Ongpin Foundation Inc. for the initiative in organizing this seminar.”
Natividad said that DOLE has been in the frontline in resolving labor issues both in private and government sectors.  It is the advocacy of the department to continue in maintaining the industrial peace throughout the country, and this is one of the perfect venues to advocate to the conciliators – the barangay officials of Claveria. This will enable them to be more confident and accurate in achieving industrial tranquility in their respective areas.
