DOLE-X capacitates 14 workers’ associations

Cagayan de Oro City – Some 14 livelihood-assisted associations of the western part of Misamis Oriental were oriented on the Department of Labor and Employment’s (DOLE’s) Workers Organization Development Program (WODP), thru the Western Misamis Oriental Provincial Field Office (WMO PFO) on 30-31 March 2017 at De Luxe Hotel and Restaurant, this city.

This year, the WMO PFO through Provincial Chief Ebba B. Acosta chose to enhance the capabilities of some associations. “These are groups who wanted or needed trainings but have no funds,” Acosta informed.

WODP targets trade unions and workers’ organization for self and group development through these learning sessions or trainings.

Newly assigned DOLE-X Regional Director Joffrey M. Suyao inspired the participants, mostly in the informal sector in his message, “It is an honor for me to meet you since you are one of the important sectors our Department should focus on in providing livelihood assistance.”

Suyao further encouraged and hoped that the livelihood assistance will alleviate the current economic status of the groups, and with the training provided shall also enhance their progress.

Meanwhile, resource speaker from the National Labor Relations Commission (NLRC), 8th Division Commissioner Proculo T. Sarmen shared the importance of parliamentary procedure to avoid wastage of time, money and effort of the associations in conducting meetings.

“It may save thousands or even millions of pesos for certain groups for the unnecessary cost of meals during unnecessary meetings,” Sarmen further adviced the group.

Sarmen also discussed the difference between a manager and a leader. “A leader has an ability to get others to follow willingly,” he defined. He also pointed out that the best style of leadership to be adopted by the group is the democratic type since it gives opportunity for all members to participate especially in making policies; which may be good or bad, but can be changed or corrected.

“Commitment is very important especially to the leaders. They are the catalyst for the association to prosper,” were the Commissioner’s parting words.

Other topics discussed were the elements to strengthen an organization and the McKinsey 7s Framework which informs the group on management and structure of the organization.

DOLE continues its goal not just to provide livelihood assistance but to complete the “package” thru capacity building trainings that will help the individuals and the group achieve its full potential and sustenance most importantly.
