WODP scholar graduates and thankful to DOLE

Cagayan de Oro City --- “I am very thankful to DOLE for helping me graduate,” were the few words of Jefferson Evander Rocha, a Workers Organization Development Program (WODP) scholar under the Isabelo delos Reyes scholarship of the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE).

DOLE Regional Office No. X – Western Misamis Oriental (WMO) Provincial Field Office (PFO) Chief Ebba B. Acosta informed that the scholarship program aims to help the dependents of organized group members to pursue education.

Mr. Rocha is now a graduate of Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering at one the top universities in Cagayan de Oro City, Ateneo de Cagayan-Xavier University. “The scholarship grant aided my studies for five years, from 2012-2017,” Mr. Rocha said. “It helped me a lot especially for the tuition, allowance, books I needed and other expenses like projects,” he added.

“Being a scholar, is not easy. I had to put extra effort to my studies since I have to balance my time well, both in helping the household chores and studying. I always make it to a point to help in the laundry, cooking and other chores even if I have seven to 12 subjects every semester. Travelling time from home to school and back was also one of my challenges since I live far from my school. We also don’t have an internet connection which is important nowadays since teachers upload handouts online. But still, I have managed all those, because I have passed all my subjects,” Mr. Rocha relayed.

When asked what his plans are for the future, he said, “Right now, I will focus on my licensure examination, so I can land a good job after. I will also try to make a strategic plan for Del Monte Philippines (DMP)-Cannery, which is the instrument in availing the scholarship and to DOLE-X in supporting me from the start to finish of my studies. I will make a re-entry plan for DMP to contribute for the development of the office/department. I also have a plan to expand my knowledge by taking up Masters and Doctors degree in Engineering.”

WODP scholarship is a program of DOLE that strengthens trade unionism and other workers organization by promoting their capabilities as independent and active partners in national development; to empower workers through the provision of accessible information facilities as well as training, including skills training for livelihood and educational assistance.
