245 job applicants hired-on-the-spot; 3K applicants/ mostly Marawi-siege IDPs registered during 120t

 

Iligan City --- The Department of Labor and Employment, Regional Office No. X (DOLE-X), thru its Lanao del Norte (LDN) Provincial Field Office (PFO)  conducted a one-day Trabaho, Negosyo, Kabuhayan (TNK) Jobs and Business Fairs, in coordination with the Department of Trade and Industry-X (DTI-X), on 12 June 2018 during the 120th celebration of the Philippine Independence at the Mindanao State University – Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT), Tibanga, this city. DOLE-X Regional Director Atty. Joffrey M. Suyao reported that 245 job applicants were hired-on-the-spot (HOTS) from the 3,483 registered. Priority applicants were the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs)/workers of Marawi City.

 

Dir. Suyao disclosed that the Job Fair offered 11,587 job vacancies from the 56 companies who attended. 31 companies of which offered 3,999 jobs for local employment with top vacancies from the construction and BPO industries. Likewise, 16 POEA-licensed overseas manpower agencies also offered 3,252 vacancies for skilled workers and nurses mostly bound for middle-east countries. Two government agencies also posted 850 vacancies.

 

MSU-IIT Vice-Chancellor for Academic Affairs Dr. Franco Teves shared the university’s mission to instill nationalism and love of God for their students imbibing the value of entrepreneurship. They aim to produce highly-trained graduates and productive workforce who are capable of increasing their finances and become contributors to the country’s economy. Likewise, LGU-Iligan Chief of Staff Rolando Cuizon who expressed the same objective among his constituents in the city, conveyed that the LGU also aims for a no labor complaints community. He wished that employers start right in their hiring, so as to have a better future for everyone.   

 

DOLE Undersecretary Joel Maglunsod, in his message, he shared that the Department has already financed some PhP 76.1 Million worth of assistance in form of livelihood, starter kits and other mechanisms like emergency employment to the displaced workers of Marawi since the previous year. USEC Maglunsod assured the public of additional assistance from the DOLE, as a response to the Duterte administration’s rehabilitation program through the Task Force Bagong Marawi.

 

Al Sapaula was the first Hired on the Spot (HOTS) of the day. After the opening ceremonies, he was already hired by Mar and Panes Staff Builders as construction helper in Marawi for the Bagong Marawi Program of the government to rebuild the once bustling city. His two years of carpentry experience brought him to the Job Fair. He learned of the Job Fair for the IDPs from DOLE-X LDN PFO during his visit in the office for a labor complaint through Single Entry Approach (SENA). As the breadwinner of the family, he works hard and was very happy he landed a job to be able to send his two children to school.

 

SENA is DOLE’s immediate program intervention aimed to amicably settle simple labor disputes not necessitating the presence of any lawyer.

 

Moreover, knowing the vacancies from the web, Sobaida S. Dimaampao, an IDP was also HOTS as cleaner of E-GMP International, Corporation, who was bound for either Riyad/Jeddah but held by last year’s Marawi siege. Her residence situated at ground zero was completely damaged, and her family evacuated to Iligan City and then currently rents a house in Tubod, Iligan City. Though still single, she already has plans to financially help the family. Her long-time plan is to rebuild their home in Marawi. She also pledged to help the education of her younger sibling who is still in Grade 10. “Malapit ko na pong maisasatupad ang aking mga pangarap dahil sa may inaantay na akong trabaho,” Soba expressed. With her Certificate of Technology, Major in Garment Trades from Mindanao State University – Marawi City credentials, E-GMP Int’l. Corp. ensured that she will be deployed within the following week from her hiring.

 

On other hand, DOLE-X Lanao del Norte Provincial Field Office Chief Remegio D. Cabañog informed that the TNK Livelihood Fair also exhibited the local products of the DOLE-assisted livelihood projects under the DOLE Kabuhayan Program. This is the Department’s contribution in alleviating the employment situation of the country. DTI-X Regional Director Lindao O. Boniao said that this will be the second year of TNK partnership with DOLE. She added that the government prioritizes small businesses for them to grow big and extend employment opportunities. Thus, some of the small businesses exhibited and sold their products like peanut butter, “palapa”, and turmeric powder of Abaga Muslim Christian Farmer Association; salabat and turmeric powder of Sangcao United Livelihood Assoc.; native coffee of Angayen Organic Culture Farmer Assoc.; assorted peanuts of Baloi Ambulant Vendors Assoc.; dried and salted fish of Tacub Fisher Folks and Farmers MPC; tamban sardines, turmeric tea, veggie polvoron, and peanuts of Paglingkawas Unified Women; bangus sardines and boneless bangus of Bulawanong Kababayen-an sa Pacita or BUKADA; longganisa of SILWA; lemon juice and banana chips of Pinuyak Farmers Cooperative; meat preserves of SWAN; and ice cream of Iligan Sorbetes Producers Cooperative. Total sales generated for the day amounted to PhP 17,535.00.

 

The One Stop Shop of government services and DOLE Clinic was also conducted at the job fair venue by members of the Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) comprising the DOLE attached agencies --- Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA), National Reintegration Center for OFWs (NRCO), National Conciliation Mediation Board (NCMB), National Labor Relations Commission (NLRC) – Iligan City Sub-RAB, Regional Tripartite Wages and Productivity Board (RWTPB), Employees Compensation Commission (ECC), Occupational Safety and Health Center (OSHC), Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) - Iligan, and POEA. Other government agencies offered their services were offered by the Social Security System; Philhealth; Pag-ibig Fund; Philippine National Police; Philippine Army; Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency; DTI-X LDN PFO; Department of Social Welfare and Development-Regional Office No. XII (DSWD-XII); Office of the Civil Defense Region-X (OCD-X); Task Force Bangon Marawi; LGU-Marawi City; and DOLE-ARMM LDN PFO. The participating jobseekers availed of the various pre-employment services from corresponding government agencies.

 

Director Suyao was elated of the all-out support from the Local Government Unit of Iligan City through Mayor Regencia and his Public Employment Service Office, PIA-Iligan City, DTI-X, ABS-CBN, PLDT, and the MSU-IIT.
