7th Mindanao Occupational Safety and Health (MOSH) Summit successfully draws 400 workers/safety prac

Cagayan de Oro City --- At least 400 workers/safety practitioners in Mindanao and some from other parts of the country attended the 7th Mindanao Occupational Safety and Health (MOSH) Summit on 16-17 August 2018 at the Grand Caprice, this city.

The Occupational Safety and Health Network of Region X (OSHNET-X) in coordination with the Department of Labor and Employment, Regional Office No. X (DOLE-X) and the Occupational Safety and Health Center (OSHC) hosted the event and was anchored on the theme, “Occupational Safety and Health: Its Significance in Globalization.” MOSH, celebrated every two years was celebrated in Davao City last 2016 and during the activity, DOLE-X Regional Director Atty. Joffrey M. Suyao ceremonially turned-over the hosting to DOLE-IX Zamboanga Peninsula on 2020.

The summit underscored a healthy and safe workplace amidst the challenges brought about by globalization. Director Suyao encouraged the 400 participants present to unite and work together in keeping the workplace safe and challenged to expand its advocacy in the entire Mindanao. Secretary of Labor Silvestre H. Bello III, in his speech delivered by Director Suyao, acknowledged that there is low public awareness, most especially for the workers in the informal sector, on health and safety workplace practices. Sec. Bello firmly believes that knowledge and commitment on the matter is essential towards decent and safe work. In the message, he expressed apologies for his absence for DOLE is waiting for the signing of President Duterte on the measures promoting the safety of Filipino laborers, granting them full protection from all hazards in their work environment through House Bill 64 and Senate Bill 1317: “Strengthening Compliance with Occupational Safety and Health Standards, Providing Penalties for Violations.” Said Bill was fortunately signed on 17 August 2018 through Republic Act 11058 or the OSH Law or “An Act Strengthening Compliance with Occupational Safety and Health Standards and Providing Penalties for Violations Thereof.”

Some of the provisions of the OSH Law are the right of the worker to know all the types of hazards, the right to deny hazardous work or with unsafe conditions, and  to have a safety officer in all the workplaces. The government, through the Duterte Administration, considers the laborers as the backbone towards a strong economy and it is therefore appropriate in protecting them from work-related dangers.

This is likewise supplemented by Board Member Gerardo Sabal III and said in his message on behalf of Misamis Oriental Provincial Governor Yevgeny Vincente Emano that healthy workers are productive workers. He further said that the summit was also a fitting venue in sharing to everyone that the province has more investors coming in resulting to more jobs.

Presentations and plenary sessions focused on the dangers brought about by globalization, like the usual hazards experienced in the country, environmental risks currently experienced due to climate change, inflation and taxation situations, and how the government through DOLE and the OSHC are addressing these hazards through strict implementation of the government’s labor standards, and in partnership with the private sector in building resiliency in improving the business in spite of these challenges. Speakers invited were considered experts in their fields with the OSHNET-X officers aptly overseeing the inquiries from the participants.

The two-day gathering of top-caliber OSH experts, consultants and advocates generated a resolution for the promotion of occupational safety and health in Mindanao. Through the exchange of best practices, the resolution ensures to further improve and strengthen programs towards a safe and healthy workplace.

Simultaneous to the presentations is the booths and exhibits of various personal protective equipment, Northern Mindanao souvenirs/“pasalubongs”, and some government services. Ceremonial cutting of ribbon for its opening was graced by OSHC Executive Director Binag, Director Suyao, and Mis. Or. Board Member Sabal.
