Public hearing on minimum wage adjustment conducted for Mis. Occ. and Lanao del Norte private sector

 

Cagayan de Oro City ---- The Department of Labor and Employment, Regional Office No. X (DOLE-X), through its Misamis Occidental and Lanao del Norte Provincial Field Office (Mis. Occ. and LDN PFOs) in partnership with the Regional Tripartite Wages and Productivity Board, Region X (RTWPB-X) conducted a public hearing/wage consultation on 8 August 2018 at the Bethany Gardens Hotel and Restaurant, Ozamiz City to some 80 employers and workers in the private sector joined the activity. Same public hearing was conducted on 9 August 2018 with 45 participants at the Plaza Alemania Hotel, Quezon Avenue Extension, Iligan City. These two rounds comply the mandatory requirement of conducting public hearing on wage adjustment based on RA 6727 of the NWPC.

 

DOLE-X Regional Director Atty. Joffrey M. Suyao in his opening remarks welcomed the participants and expressed elation on the presence of National Economic and Development Authority-X (NEDA-X) Regional Director Leon M. Dacanay, Jr. as Vice-Chairperson of the Regional Wage Board; Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) was represented by Mis. Occ. Provincial Director Jane Marie Tabucan and LDN Provincial Director Ruel D. Paclipan who ably presented trade and investment prospects of their respective provinces. The petitioner of ALU-TUCP discussed the gist of the petition for consideration by the respective participants to the two venues of the public hearing/wage consultation in the two provinces of the region.

  

“The workers and employers in all types and sorts of industries in the private sector receive the minimum wage in the region regardless of the position, designation or status, and irrespective of the method by which their wages are paid,” explained by DOLE-X Mis. Occ. Provincial Chief Leonardo G. Rodrigo.

 

These public hearings/wage consultations were prelude to the next activity in Eastern Misamis Oriental on 23 August 2018 and consequently the final activity in Cagayan de Oro City which will be open for all sectoral representatives in the region on 29 August 2018.

 

The wage consultations/public hearings were conducted to generate opinions, issues and concerns of the management and industrial workers on the propriety and necessity of increase in the regional minimum wage.

 

Representatives of the DTI of the provinces of Misamis Occidental and Lanao del Norte presented the prices of basic commodities being monitored by DTI in the region with forecasts of trade and investments, while the socio-economic status in Northern Mindanao was discussed by NEDA indicating that based on data a family of five to live above the poverty line, a monthly income of Php 42,000 would be needed.

 

According to RD Suyao, as the Chairman of the Wage Board discussed the motu propio or through petitions as modes of determining and fixing the minimum wage.  He emphasized that studies, researches and surveys are necessary considerations for the Wage Board to come up with a decision on the issuance of the wage order.

 

The petitioner Associated Labor Unions-Trade Union Congress of the Philippines (ALU-TUCP) is seeking for a Php 320.00 per day increase across-the-board and region-wide to cope with the increasing cost of living, meet the basic needs of workers and their families, and give meaning and substance to the country’s policy of inclusive development and shared prosperity.

  

RTWPB Board Secretary Atty. Walag said that the public hearing on wage adjustment was conducted to guarantee the involvement of stakeholders and other parties affected by wage adjustment. It also helps generate data on the views or position of stakeholders on petitions for wage increase.
