55 Lourdes College SPES beneficiaries receive 40% government share


Cagayan de Oro City --- The 55 students of Lourdes College reported as beneficiaries of the Special Program for the Employment of Students (SPES) of the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) received on 7 January 2019 the 40% of the prevailing minimum wage as government share under the prompt facilitation of the DOLE Regional Office – X (DOLE-X) Cagayan de Oro Field Office (CDO FO).


DOLE-X CDO FO Chief Ebba B. Acosta informed that the said beneficiaries received a total of PhP 4,732.00 representing 40% of the minimum wage corresponding to the number of days worked under SPES contract forged. Most of the beneficiaries were academic scholars and at the same time working as student-assistants of the school. The DOLE’s SPES program not only augments expenditures and necessities on in-school youth aging 18-30 but as well as exposes them to the world of work.


SPES beneficiary Ariel M. Castillon expressed his feat working after attending classes as a student assistant/secretary in the Education Department for a few hours and at the same time as SPES beneficiary after work. “Kada human sa akong klase, mo duty ko sa Education Department. Ang akong trabaho didto as student-assistant ug isip usa ka scholar, ug secretary, tagaan ko ug bisan unsa nga sugo ug trabaho. Ug dako gyud ni ug tabang ang SPES sa bayrunon sa akong pagskwela busa nagpa-salamat gyud ko nga naka-apil ko ani nga programa,” Castillon expressed. (Every after my classes, I worked as a secretary doing multi-skilled jobs in the Education Department. My earnings from SPES are really a big help in my school expenses. I am grateful I was chosen as one of the beneficiaries of the program.)


Special Program for Employment of Students (SPES) also known as "An Act to help poor but deserving students pursue their education by encouraging their employment during summer and/or Christmas vacations through incentives granted to employers, allowing them to pay only 60% of their salaries based on minimum wage and the 40% through education vouchers to be paid by government.
