100 Jimenez SPES take part in community involvement

OROQUIETA CITY, Misamis Occidental, June 3, 2019 --- The Department of Labor and Employment, Regional Office No. X (DOLE-X) through its Provincial Field Office in Misamis Occidental (Mis. Occ. PFO) engaged the 100 beneficiaries of the Special Program for Employment of Students (SPES) under the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Jimenez in community empowerment activities.

The moist breeze in the early morning of May 17, 2019 did not bother the SPES beneficiaries in their Clean-up and Mangrove Planting activity at Brgy. Palilan Coastal Area of Jimenez and was immediately followed by the campaign against smoking with the theme, “Smoke Free Heritage Town of Jimenez Orientation and Operation Punit Opos Campaign” around the Heritage Church of St. John the Baptist.

Public Employment Service Office (PESO) Manager Arnulfo Guimalan said, “We wouldn’t be successful in our activities without the help of our diligent SPES grantees who manifest the true example of poor but deserving students.” He added that the LGU as the employer provided the beneficiaries with office work such as administrative, encoding and clerical jobs. As part of the employer’s responsibility, they ensure that the students are not subject to hazardous working conditions and child labor. The first 50 beneficiaries worked from 29 April until 28 May 2019 and the remaining batch on 6 May until 3 June 2019.

Successively, DOLE-X Mis. Occ. PFO Chief Leonardo G. Rodrigo intensified its campaign in eradicating Child Labor and discussed the labor supply and demand through the Labor Market Information (LMI) at the Sangguniang Bayan Session Hall of the Municipality.

Chief Rodrigo emphasized the importance of massive information and advocacy campaigns as mandated by Republic Act (RA) No. 9231 and other related laws declaring the provision of special protection of children from all forms of abuse, neglect, cruelty, exploitation, discrimination, and other conditions prejudicial to their development including child labor and its worst forms.

In appreciation, as the mother of the town as they call her, Municipal Mayor Rosario Balais thanked DOLE for the informative lecture and voluntarily committed to help control child labor in the province by providing focused, converged and coordinated strategies to effectively address the Department’s programs.
