Iligan City — The 26 job applicants of Lanao del Norte province’s Sultan Naga Dimaporo (SND) and Tubod towns’ festival Job Fairs were Hired-On-The-Spot (HOTS).

Lorhilyo Luguban was among the HOTS, mostly from the wholesale and retail industries. A 23-year-old from Tubod, he was the last person to register during the day of the Job Fair and did not expect to be hired right away as a sales person by HTZ Shopping Center. Before, he was just doing side jobs selling appliances and other goods just to make ends meet for his mother and younger siblings. Lorhilyo is a high school graduate who assists his mother in managing a small sari-sari store. His father’s death brought their family financial difficulties, enabling him to stop schooling and instead became the family’s breadwinner.

“Naningkamot gyud ko ug suroy ug mga appliances ug pangita ug raket aron naay ikabuhi sa akong mama ug mga manghud.  Gikan pa gyud ko ug raket ani.  Wala gyud ko gadahum nga madawatan dayun ko.  Dako gyud kaayo ang akong pagpasalamat ani nga programa sa DOLE ug sa LGU Tubod para aning opportunidad,” Luguban said.

[I tried selling appliances on the streets and other side jobs to financially support my mother and younger siblings.  I just got here (Job Fair) from a side job. I was surprised to be hired immediately. I am very grateful to DOLE and LGU Tubod for this Job Fair program for this job opportunity.]

Likewise, Tubod ice and peanut vendor and HOTS Gheralden Quitor was grateful on the convenience of the Job Fair program.

“Nagpasalamat ko sa DOLE kay makatabang gyud ni nga programa sa mga nanginahanglan. Dili na ta mubyahe pa sa layo kay ila ng gidool ang trabaho para namo,” Quitor said.

[I am thankful to DOLE for bringing the (Job Fair) program nearer to us, especially those in need. We no longer need to travel far for job opportunities were made more accessible to us (jobseekers).]

Quitor was hired as a saleslady by HTZ Shopping Center. She is the second oldest child among the four daughters of her farmer father and housewife mother. Due to financial difficulties, she gave up going to school at college level to help her father with their bills.

Moreover, SND Vice-Mayor Ulwan Dimaporo supported their first Job Fair to boost employment and reduce poverty incidence of his constituents.

Dimaporo said 10 jobseekers were scheduled to take the Philippine Army Recruitment Office’s qualifying exam.

Similarly, 30 uniformed personnel applicants from Tubod were near hires of the Philippine Army, Philippine National Police Academy, and Bureau of Jail Management and Penology.

In coordination with the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE-X) – Lanao del Norte Provincial Field Office (LDN PFO), OIC-Chief lawyer Safrali Cabili said the Job Fairs were part of the celebration of Tubod’s 76th Sagingan on 4-5 October 2022 and SND’s Tulingan Festivals on 3 October 2022.

Cabili said a One-Stop-Shop Assistance Desks of government services were availed in the said events. Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA); Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA); Department of Trade and Industry (DTI); Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA); and Social Security Services (SSS) of Iligan City were in support during the Job Fairs.

Cabili underscored the importance of bringing DOLE programs closer to the people with priority to remote urban areas.

Job Fair is a DOLE program and a venue where applicants select vacancies suited to their qualifications. This is a mechanism to fast-track the meeting of the jobseekers and employers/overseas recruitment agencies to reduce cost, time and effort particularly on the part of the applicants. This is open to all unemployed, skilled and unskilled workers, fresh graduates and displaced workers who lost their jobs due to COVID-19 pandemic.
