EL SALVADOR, Misamis Oriental – A first timer to apply for work in a Job Fair and buko vendor of Barangay Taytay, Gerry Andam and laborer Rengie Labawan were among the 12 of the Hired-On-The-Spot (HOTS) during the Fifth Nipa Festival Job Fair on 12 August 2022 at the city’s gymnasium, here.

Andam and Labawan are now Production Workers at Kauswagan Micro Solution Incorporated (KMSI), located at Kauswagan, Cagayan de Oro City. The Fifth Nipa Festival Job Fair was spearheaded by the City’s Job Placement Bureau, in coordination with the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE-X).

DOLE-X Misamis Oriental Provincial Field Office (Mis. Or. PFO) Chief Errol Natividad said the Job fair is a DOLE program that serves as a stepping stone to alleviate the working poor.

“We highly appreciate the efforts of the local government of the city, participating placement services, and the local and overseas employers/agencies. We at DOLE-X, continuously encourage our partners to initiate Job Fairs to address the demand for those who need employment, as this not only opens venues for opportunity but also helps in creating a work-friendly environment,” Natividad said.

Moreover, Natividad said 34 local and overseas employers participated with more than 300 job vacancies. The one-day event interviewed some 570 job applicants. For HOTS educational qualifications, a high school diploma is at least required for applicants seeking to be hired in the Job Fair.

Mr. Andam was able to qualify as a HOTS for his high school educational attainment. He applied for the position to alleviate the income for his family. His daily income as a buko vendor is not enough to defray his household expenses. Through this Job Fair, Andam was able to find a job through KMSI, giving him his needed opportunity.

“Karun pa ko kasulay aning Job Fair, wala ko magdahum madawat dayun ko diretso, ug nalipay kaayo ko kay dako ni nga tabang sa akong pamilya nga naka trabaho nako,” Andam said.

[It is my first time to apply a job thru Job Fair.  I did not expect that I will be hired on the spot, and I am very happy because this job will be of great help to me and my family.]

Likewise, Labawan, a laborer from Alubijid, applied through the Job Fair. As a high school graduate, he was also qualified as HOTS as a Production Worker. This will help him provide more financial support for his family and the school expenses of his four children.

The Job Fair was anchored on the theme, “Tagnipan-on: Lig-on nga Napadayun alang sa Hapsay nga Kaugmaon”. It served as a venue where applicants select vacancies suited to their qualifications. This is a mechanism to fast-tract the meeting of the jobseekers and employers/overseas recruitment agencies to reduce cost, time and effort particularly on the part of the applicants. This is open to all unemployed, skilled and unskilled workers, fresh graduates and displaced workers who lost their job when the pandemic hit.

The Local Government Unit of El Salvador City, Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA), Public Employment Service Office (PESO) personnel and DOLE-X Mis. Or. were in full support of the event.
