CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY— The city’s 20 parents of identified child laborers got P500,000 worth of Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE-X) Bikecination Projects on 17 August 2022 at Barra, Macabalan, this city.
DOLE-X Cagayan de Oro Field Office (CDO FO) Chief Emmanuel Toledo said the turnover was in coordination with the city’s Job Placement Bureau-Public Employment Service Office (JPB-PESO) and was released thru the Department’s Accredited Co-Partner Macajalar Wharf Porters Association Federation of Free Workers Multi-Purpose Cooperative (MWPA FFW-MPC).
Toledo said the recipients were profiled last year by the Department’s enumerators under the Child Labor Prevention and Elimination Program (CLPEP). Because of the challenges of the pandemic, these parents found it hard to provide financially for their families and instead pushed their children to child labor to make ends meet.
Moreover, the grant is inclusive of a bicycle with insulation bag, protective helmet, android mobile phone with P5,000 load, mechanical tools and training for bike repair and maintenance.
Laundress and beneficiary of Barangay Bonbon, Merelyn R. Alon said, “Ako na gyud ipabalik ug eskwela akong anak. Pwede ra gyud na ako nalang musuroy sa mga isda nga gipangisda sa akong bana pinaagi aning bike gihatag sa DOLE.”
[I will now let my daughter go back to school for I can now peddle what my husband fished through this bike given by DOLE.]
Alon’s 11-year-old daughter stopped school to help her fisherman father sell the fish within the barangay.
Toledo said, “DOLE is steadfast in its fight against child labor. With the help of our partner agencies and as a government, we continue to give interventions in any way possible. I hope these livelihoods will be able to help them improve their income so they can return their children to school—where they belong.”
The DOLE Bikecination is a special project under the DOLE Integrated Livelihood Program (DILP), a grant assistance for entrepreneurial ventures for the working poor, vulnerable and marginalized workers.
CLPEP is one of the flagship programs of DOLE that contributes to the Philippine Program against Child Labor (PPACL) with the vision of a child-labor free Philippines. It mainly focuses on the elimination and removal of children from all kinds of child labor. Provision of livelihood grant is part of the department’s strategy to assist their families under the program.
